Appreciating inconveniences

Appreciating inconveniences

Nobody likes inconveniences in life, and nobody likes to be inconvenienced. But I've learnt to look at inconveniences in a different perspective, all thanks to mum =)

I know I'm light years late in mentioning about the Intersate bridge that collapsed in Minnesota about 1 week?? or so ago. When commenting on this incident, mum reiterated the fact that the roads in our country are very well maintained - although we are often inconvenienced by road works which caused some lanes to be closed, as a result causing traffic jams, etc. She felt that it was precisely because of the regular maintenance that our roads (umm ... don't need to mention the Nicoll Highway incident here ya, coz the main cause is the weakened structure due to the construction of the MRT lines) are so fit for use, although everyday they withstand tons of weight under all the vehicles that pass through them. Moreover, the regular maintenance of the roads gave opportunities for more people (especially the foreign workers) to be employed. Hence, "inconveniences are good".

I thought what she said was rather "unique", and I kept that in mind. I guess today I can, in a way, affirm that there's great wisdom in what she said.

Today being a school holiday, the traffic on the way to college is surprising and relatively light, and of course travelling on it is a breeze! As I made my way into the PIE from Lornie exit, the electronic signboard updates, "Accident at BKE exit". Well, the flow of traffic wasn't disrupted by the accident in any case, and I soon passed by the accident venue. What I saw was a motor-bike lying on the ground - I didn't see the rider.

It suddenly dawned upon me that sometimes when the road is too easy to travel on, it creates the tendency for one to speed, and the driver soon finds the vehicle getting out of control because of the high-speed it is travelling in on such traffic-free, breezy roads. Mum's words came ringing back, "inconveniences are good." And I wonder, "quite true, usually when the traffic flow is heavy, the vehicles are travelling at a more controlled speed, and the drivers are in greater control of their vehicles." So, while inconviences slow us down, they make us slow down, pause, and gain control of what's in our hands.

I've learnt a great deal from my parents - although they did not receive much education, but they had very good perspectives about things, and great values about life which they impart to us. What more can I thank God for?
