Where you find crowds of people

Where you find crowds of people

Hmm... I haven't blog for quite a few days. I guess not being "stimulated" by external catalyst such as lectures, books, assignments, etc does make a difference to how active the brain juices are =)

Anyway, was just thinking about places or occasions where we can find crowds of people. I could think of 5 possible scenario ...

1) When something is new - well, now and then we have some shopping complexes "sprouting" out, or some mega stores plonging itself somewhere, or some new COOL shops that tell you "You've got to be in, otherwise you're out" kind of stuff. Remember how Vivo City used to be the novelty and you see crowds of people even on a weekday, not to mention weekday working hours. Then now we have Central, and maybe Airport Terminal 3 by Jan next year?? There where something is new, you will see crowds flocking to "get an experience", "try the novelty", "see what it's like", etc. But the sad fact is very quickly when the novelty wears out, the crowds are gone too - all so easily ...

2) When something or someone is cute - I'm not sure if you are a fan of Knut, the polar bear cub who was rejected by his mother after he was born last Dec. He was handraised by one of the zoo-keeper who gave him much care, love and attention that a cub would need, bottle-feeding him, bathing him regularly, rubbing him with oil to substitute his mother's saliva which contains fat (haha, hope I'm not wrong). Well, Knut does grow up to be a real cute and charming fellow - his snowy fur and button eyes - wow, you will really get charmed by him (go look for his pictures in the web). Knut appeared in public in March this year when the zoo felt he was ready, in terms of weight, health, etc. Many were fascinated and charmed by his cuteness and "beauty" (if I could use this word for lack of a better adjective as of now). However, as he grows more and more, weaning off his cuteness and pictures of him becoming a heavier cub, with more shaggy yellowish fur, people are probably less "charmed" by him. He's still cute in his ways, I supposed, but all these just makes me wonder how long more will people flock to the Berlin Zoo to take a peep at him? Sad, isn't it - when human beings are so prone to what's new, what's cute, what's enchanting, etc - and when that don't attract us anymore, our attention quickly and easily shift to another, and the whole cycle begins again ...

3) When something or someone is phasing out - the recent news about the Oasis Building having to make way for the Sports Development Council, seems to be a luring factor for people flocking to various restaurants in the building before it finally moved out of the premise - perhaps more so for The Oasis Taiwan Porridge Restaurant - something that stood so long in history with it's savory sweet-potato porridge meal. Often times too - when someone needs to phase out of a particular place, there seems to be bundles after bundles of appreciations said there and then - not that this is not right, but I just find it so ironical - why must we wait for such times, or even special occasions (whatever days that we have in the calendar year) to say words of appreciation? Can't we be more generous with our encouragements that lift up the hearts and spirits of people?

4) When there's sales, exhibition, freebies, etc - sigh* it seems to portray an "ugly" side of human. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against getting good offers and being good stewards of money, but sometimes when you are in places like these, you really (and I mean, REALLY!) see people ransacking the trollys/wagons, etc rummaging through piles to grab something that they like which is cheap. At times, we have people who "abuse" such situations as well - especially when freebies are given - I remember hearing about some temples giving free meals and people (those that can afford decent meals) coming to have free lunches practically everyday just to save cost for themselves.

5) When something has happened that arouse the curiosity of others - not an unfamiliar sight to have people flocking to scenes of accidents, or drivers turning their heads to "what's happening there huh?" as they drive past an accident scene. My question is, out of those curious fellows, how many will really be caring enough to lend a helping hand, getting their hands dirty and saving some lives? It will be a fortunate thing if we don't get people copying vehicle numbers hoping to strike 4Ds, if not people who just wants to satisfy their curiosity only.

Somehow, thinking about this topic makes me take a look at human nature also - how we often love the new, and forget the old ... how we often "abuse" and "take advantage" of others that we can pushover ... I'm wondering also how many will be curious enough to flock to either our church or Christians around because there's just so much "mystery" about what God is doing that makes people curious and wondering in amazement ... are we making people curious enough about God, and who He is? I hope we can also have the magnetic factor that will draw the crowds to us, and our churches too ...
