The Prestige
The Prestige
V bought a new flat-screen TV and invited the CG to his home for a movie night =) Well, I guess after all these months of BS, it was time for a chill-out too ... haha
We watched "The Prestige" together, and I was simply impressed with the great script the script-writer produced for this movie. Although at some parts, a few of us were "confused" about who is who, and what is what, at the end of the movie, we all agreed that it was a great show!
The story revolves around two up and rising young friends and magicians, Angier and Borden, who turned rivals after an unfortunate accident happened to Angier's wife. Anger began to consume Angier and the feud between them deepens as they try to out-do one another in the magician circle - finding out each other's secrets to the latest tricks each perform, trying to outshine the other. Angier became so obsessed that he spent his fortune trying to find out the secrets behind Borden's illusion, and wanting whatever machines that assisted Borden in performing his tricks. Well, I guess I won't reveal too much of what the movie is about, but it's a great movie - go borrow it and watch it yourself =)
What I guess I learnt from this movie is how scary obsession, anger and revenge can be if they are not well managed. It was obsession to out-do and beat his rival that drove Angier to the extreme and as a result, lost the woman who loved him and his long-time friend ... it was anger that consumed Angier so much that he tried ways and means to uncover Borden's secrets, trying to make life miserable for Borden as much as he himself had felt and lived after his wife's death ... it was revenge that led Angier on from one obsession/act to another - and perhaps I could say, to a road of no return.
In reality, there's also a lot of people obsessed with getting famous, out-doing and out-shining one another, perhaps in pursuit of fame, honor and wealth, but are all these worth it? Not sure if you read the 22nd June ST Pg 12 about a doctor in India, "Doctor lets 15-year-old son operate on woman"? - all in a bid to enter his boy in Guinness Book of Records as the world's youngest surgeon. My reaction to that was, "Stupid idea", and now that doctor is under the investigation of the Medical Institute. Is it worth it? Just getting the name into the Records and getting "famous"???
A great deal of people struggled with anger and revenge too - especially when they feel they are being wronged by others. In their bid to seek justice for themselves, many times, tragedies happened to them or their loved ones, and they ended up more miserable than before. Are all these worth it?
Romans 12:19 reminds us "Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord." God is one who acts on behalf of the oppressed. Leave things into the hands of the living God who hears the cries of the oppressed and acts on behalf of them - not easy because human tendency is to want to act instantly and see results that satisfy us, but God who holds the entire universe together and who is in control of all people and things knows better.
