Worship team and dress sense - how does it correlate?
Since a few weeks ago, the backups for the MS worship were no longer standing with the worship leader on the stage - that was what I realized yesterday after our worship practice when I was told by one of them.
As someone who's genuinely curious about anything and everything, I sought an answer with the MS Worship Team I/C. That was the answer I got:-
1) Sometimes the backups don't quite know how to show appropriate facial expression / worship postures during the worship, and hence "affected" the congregation somewhat.
2) Sometimes the backups wear something that is not as appropriate for worship - not formal enough, or too distracting, etc.
Hearing what he said prompted me to think about the important role the worship team plays in any and every service ...
Because the worship team is at centre-stage when they lead, what we say, do, expresses through our bodies, dressing, etc - CANNOT be too loud or overly distracting such that it gets people distracted from worshipping God and filled their minds with "Why does this person do this? .... Why does this person dress like that? ... Why is his/her facial expression so tight that I don't feel he/she is worshipping God?" etc, etc
On the other hand though, I began to be rather "amused" at how besides being people who strive to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit during worship leading, we also have to ensure we are people who keep up with good dress sense! =)
I guess there needs to be a balance and wisdom in projecting ourselves in the physical manner as worthy servants of God. It should not be the extreme case of being obssessed with what to wear for worship (neither overdress or under-dress), neither should it be too LOUD, distracting and stumbling. I'm tempted to offer a few guidelines here =) - haha, not that my fashion sense is marvelous, but some principles that guide me in my own dressing:-
- Ask if your dressing is GST - Glorifying to God, will it Stumble another person, does it Testify to who you are in God?
a) Remember: God takes centre-stage, so the question is, will your fashion and apparels glorify God? Are the pieces we adorn too floral and loud, too colorful and distracting, etc?
b) Does it stumble another person? Are what we are wearing too low cut, or too above knee-length, etc? There's a time, a place, an occasion, etc to "flaunt" your assets if you have, but definitely not during moments that God gave you this privilege to be on stage to lead His people, and may I add that it's also not when we go to church, even if we're not serving but going to church for worship - the attention and focus of everybody should solely be on the Lord, not His people !
c) Does it testify to who you are in God? I've heard people commenting that Christians are very square ... don't know how to enjoy life ... don't know how to dress well, etc, etc. I don't think these comments are true, agree? Christians are people who are confident in the Lord because we know who we are - hence our lives and lifestyle ought to radiate the same!
In general, if you look at yourself in the mirror and you don't like what you see because it makes you uncomfortable, or you feel something is out of place - then change whatever you need to. The crux is: you have to pass your own test first!
