Emoticons

Emoticons

If you're on MSN, chances are you will get chat messages from friends that are sometimes coupled with emoticons. Why call them emoticons? Because they are icons that expresses some emotions and feelings which help you express what you want to write as you converse with your friends via MSN.

The are some emoticons that are really cute, and for one who likes cute things (including animations, cute pictures, etc) - I'm quite a collector of these emoticons. I think I have quite a fair bit of emoticons in my MSN, so much so that I kind of run out of ideas about how to name them ...

While I like to use emoticons, I realized that not everyone appreciates it - especially if you are discussing work matters with colleagues, and some of them just had problems trying to figure out what you are typing. As such, I had to revise some of the words I type by capitalizing some letters within the words, or use a combination of capital and small letters. Quite an agony, actually. And I think it agonizes the readers too ...

Another lesson I learnt about using emoticon is, you've got to be careful with the emoticons you use!! I was totally embarassed with myself when I use a particular emoticon to indicate "..." while conversing with a friend and I think the "..." emoticon I saved it under is actually a bunch or rather a string of small heart-shapes (hmm... I can't quite express how it looks like here, but something like each "." is represented by different sized heart shapes, and a few of them string together to form "..." and "float" like bubbles - something like that), but anyway I didn't realize I used it twice while conversing with him, and before I knew it, oh my goodness, he went offline. Well, I'm just hoping he don't get the wrong idea of me using this particular emoticon - it really wasn't deliberate, just an accident ;p I'm not sure if he gets to read this post, but if he does, I really hope he don't get the wrong idea =) Dead meat ...

So you see, sometimes emoticons aren't really that useful afterall. Before I type this entry, I had spent some time revising the names of my emoticons to prevent such kind of possible "misunderstanding" that might arise in the future .. haha

Totally embarassed ... but lessons learnt =)
