For some laughter ...

For some laughter ...

Blessed (Lunar) New Year to all!! May God's richest blessings be upon everyone and every household!

It has been a tradition that guests will visit my mum on the first day of lunar new year - don't ask me why, I can't give an explanation since my dad was actually no. 2 in the line of his 3 siblings, anyway, since I was born it has been this way that we expect guests to our home on the first day instead of going out for visitation.

Mum has told Puji about some usual traditions like no sweeping of the floor on day 1 of the new year, no throwing of rubbish, etc except after 6pm. It was so funny that Puji thought everything is forbidden, including showering before 6pm. We all had a good laugh, including her =)

Next when the son of my niece (my cousin's daughter who is one year my senior, but in terms of status I'm her aunt, haha) came by, he just uttered a series of whatever 4-word Chinese idioms he can think of when he sees people. So when he came (he's 5 years old) and said all these auspicious words to my mum, without knowing what is appropriate and what is not, he said to my mum, " 快 高 长 大" (may you grow up quickly) and we all had a good laugh.

On the second day of New Year, we heard something like it's a taboo to go visitation on this day - but mum said after 12pm it's fine, so I'm not even sure who's right who's wrong, what's right and what's wrong. Another cousin wanted to visit mum with his family, so he called to make sure we are home and he came slightly after 12pm and while we were just casually chit-chatting, he asked my mum about this taboo, and his wife teased him that because they were unsure about whether it was a taboo, my cousin drove so slowly so as to ensure he reach my place after 12pm, and not before that. We are all so amused by what we heard.

Anyway, the few days of rest seemed to zoom past quickly, and whether it's visiting friends and relatives, or entertaining them at home, all require strength, emotion and energy, and I'm just so zonked and stoned on this 3rd day ...

Although the Chinese seemed to have many taboos, but I cherish very much some of the very good values the different festive seasons bring along - and I'm thankful for a great time of catching up with family and relatives during this season, and thankful to the Lord for everyone of them as well.
