Non-conventional

Non-conventional

Well, I'm not a cabbie's friend since I drive myself around most of the time. During those drive-times, I "bumped" into cabs that I'm quite surprised to see - so non-conventional, take a look at the pictures below and you'll know what I mean ...

I believe these are not the only "non-conventional" cabs around in the little red dot. But what struck me was how much the image of cabs in current days have "deviated" from its originally familiar feel - remember the yellow-black cabs? the light blue comfort taxis? and later on the red-and-white SMRT's range?? Now look at what cabs "have become"? Hatch-back, outrageous colors - I heard over the radio that a PINK cab was spotted by someone on the island too.
Thinking about how some conventional things can so easily become non-conventional - perhaps as a result of image, packaging, commercializing, attractiveness, and whatever have you reasons, I begin to question about ourselves as a Church, and ourselves as representatives of God, in our way of reaching out to community and people around us - have we also in a way, to follow "trends" become so non-conventional that we begin to compromise certain images and traditions that ought to be retained? I don't know, I'm not saying that we are, but just throwing out a question for us to ponder and think through ...
It's very easy to position oneself in such a way that "attracts" responses from others. Just take a look at how our schools these days are becoming so "commercialized" - with different CCAs to attract students of special calibre ... striving hard towards good results so that more will enrol with the school, etc, etc.
While it's good to keep up with time, I think there's a place for traditions to be retained, and to caution oneself against becoming non-conventional. I'll leave you to ponder from here ...
