Scrutiny
Would you agree with me if I were to say that Christians, as compared to other religions, are "judged" and "monitored" more severely, stringently and closely by people in the world? I mentioned I had a few posts I wanted to write on, but I hesitated about writing because I can't quite decide if I should do it at all - the reason being those are things I've heard or observed about my own fellow brethen which brings no glory to the God we profess to worship and love ...
An auntie whom my family knew quite well passed away a few weeks ago. She had 4 children, out of which 2 of them are Christians in the family. During the wake, members from the daughter/son-in-law's church (the son-in-law is a pastor) came and visited the family. The church members did not pay respect to the deceased, neither did the daughter and son-in-law agreed to wearing sack-cloth as a sign of mourning. Their reason - it was not a Christian wake, and wearing sack-cloth is not Christian. I didn't know how to react when I heard that ...
Honestly speaking, as a fellow Christian, I feel ashame of what I've heard. What's wrong with paying respect to the dead by just observing a minute or so of silence before the picture of deceased? What's wrong with wearing sack-cloth to indicate that the family is mourning?
As if that were not enough, the church members and the daughter/son-in-law drew quite an attention by their loudness and laughter - during the wake. I asked myself, "what is this???" Someone who profess to be a pastor ... another who profess to be the pastor's wife ... others who profess to be the pastor's church members - what are we saying to the world? What sort of witness are we bearing? What testimony are we talking about here?
This auntie of mine left no big inheritance behind, probably a sum of 20 thousands or so, and the next thing we heard of was her daughter "fighting" for her share from this inheritance - "Watch the elder brother and make sure he doesn't help himself to it."
My heart ached ... and I lament ... what has the world become? Christians who don't behave like Christians ... bearers of God's Word whose walk and talk mismatch. I didn't know how to react or what to say to my non-Christian sister and mother who knew about this ...
And I wonder how God felt when He looked from heaven and sees all these ...
